n the first year since the band was formed, LOLOET was trying out various sounds to create their signature sound.

The song "ELLE" was the first song that we wanted to try, leaving behind the poetry reading vocal style.

I only wrote the chord progression and melody, and the other members arranged it. LOLOET is a band that is half improvised, so we improvise and arrange the songs during the gig. Sometimes we riffed Chan-keng's synth, and sometimes we riffed the guitar sound that I played on the bass, but gradually it solidified.

The recording is always done by the members only. Yoshizawa is the recording and mixing engineer, and always adds magic at the end. hamachi adds an impressive sound by hitting a mysterious rotten tree that he picked up somewhere as percussion, and Chan-keng's trumpet and Yoshizawa's guitar create an emotional composition that explodes towards the end.

Wada's lyrics are written in French and tell the story of two sisters who experience a misunderstanding. It's a message from an older sister who is sympathetic to her younger sister's loneliness, and as always, it's a straightforward expression that is typical of Wada.

"Balcon" is a minimalist ambient song that Wada was working on remotely with me in Tokyo when he was still living in France.
I had some improvised sound recordings that I had applied effects to a kalimba and recorded at home, so I asked the members to add sounds to complete it. There was no click, and it was unclear what the beat was, but we had them improvise and dub it into a continuous loop.

I think these two songs are appropriate for conveying LOLOET now in its second year since being formed.

Artist Profile

  • LOLOET

In 2023, Ayaka Wada, a former Japanese idol, formed LOLOET with musicians in Tokyo while studying abroad in Paris in search of freer musical expression. After field recording in Paris and studio work in Tokyo, she released her first song, "SŒUR," in October 2023. After Wada returned to Japan, she released "une petite pensée" on cassette tape and digitally on her own label in March 2024. In addition, in May 2025, she released the single "ELLE" on vinyl record through Tough Beats. With the theme of "ringing sounds" that resonate while relating to each other, she creates alternative musicality that incorporates the uplifting feeling of Japanese rituals into ambient drones, DUB, experimental music, environmental music, and improvisation, and is active not only in live houses but also in bookstores, museums, art spaces, and other locations.
