KNOX CLASSICS: Sacred Noise
AIヴァーチャル・ロックバンド KNOX による、クラシック・アレンジ・アルバム。
バッハ、ヴィヴァルディ、ワーグナー、ドヴォルザーク、ムソルグスキー、ヴェルディ、マスネ、ベートーヴェン。数百年を隔てた8人の作曲家が遺した主題を、5人編成のロックバンドの語法へと翻訳した全8曲。すべての原曲はパブリックドメイン、すべての歌詞はオリジナル。
出発点は、パイプオルガンが沈黙を破る一音だった。バッハのトッカータをディストーションギターへ移し替えたとき、この試みが成立することが分かった。以降、夏の嵐、戦場を駆ける騎行、禿山の魔物たち、審判の日の怒り、瞑想の静けさ——原曲が抱えていた情景を、歪んだギターとドラムの上で組み直していった。
クラシックを「引用」したのではない。主題だけを取り出し、残りをすべてバンドの音で埋め直した。対位法はリフになり、管弦楽の厚みはギターの層になり、合唱は一人のヴォーカルになった。失われたものもあるが、代わりに得られたものがある。
最後に置かれるのはベートーヴェンの第九、歓喜の歌。1曲目で破られた沈黙は、8曲を経てここに辿り着く。嵐のあと、旅路のあと、審判のあと。
