Fukakusa Shōshō was a nobleman of the Heian period who fell deeply in love with a princess.
But the lady would not give her heart easily. She told him:
If you come to me every night for one hundred nights, I will accept your feelings.
This was a harsh trialthere would be stormy nights, snowy nights, and bitter cold.
Still, Fukakusa Shōshō continued, night after night, quietly standing before her gate, pouring his heart into each of those hundred nights.
Finally, the one hundredth night arrived. However
That night, a fierce storm struck. His body weakened by the cold, he collapsed, never to rise again. The love of a hundred nights went unfulfilled.
This tale remains a story of loyalty and love, unrequited passion, and a love worth dying for.
Later generations came to see hundred nights of visiting as a symbol of true devotion. It is featured in many poems and stories, loved as one of Japans most beautiful yet sorrowful romantic legends.
