Beat & ambient producer TOMC's new track is his first real "lo-fi hiphop" track, featuring the warm and gentle sounds of Fender Rhodes piano. Since 2021, he has released one jazz hip-hop album and one ambient album on the popular Canadian label Inner Ocean Records, and this track "Innocence" is the full-fledged fusion of the two genres.
The use of spatial reverb, the warmth of record-like textures, and the elaborate environmental sounds in the middle to the end of the track, all of these characteristics can be combined without any sense of discomfort, which is only possible with his career as an expert in both beats and ambient music. The artwork, with its hazy blue color that evokes the time of day, either dusk or dawn, is also symbolic of the artist himself, who actively challenges the boundaries of genres under the theme of city life.
His latest single "Place To Be" was picked up by Spotify's global playlist "All New Jazz", and we can't take our eyes off his ongoing musical adventures that transcend genres.
TOMC is a beat and ambient producer whose works have been released on acclaimed labels such as Inner Ocean Records (Canada), Insert Records (Sweden), and Kankyō Records, Local Visions, and Kakubarhythm (Japan). His 2023 album True Life was praised as 'a Nujabes for the 2020s' and was selected as one of the Best Albums of the Year by international music outlet Small Albums. In recent years, he has joined the legendary Japanese experimental collective Taj Mahal Travellers (now STONE MUSIC), touring with them in India. At the same time, his wide-ranging activities -- providing a monthly DJ mix for J-WAVE, engaging in dialogues with artists such as Tetsuya Komuro and tofubeats, and performing at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai -- have drawn attention for transcending the boundaries between mainstream and underground. Beyond his music, TOMC is also active as a writer. His recent book J-POP no Ongaku-teki Bouken (The Musical Adventures of J-POP) explores Japanese pop music from a unique, groove-oriented perspective.
